Many of you remember church basements.
How is your memory of Christian slogans and t-shirts?
Did you ever attend a Christian music festival? If you did, you might recall some great t-shirts. There was a trend, in evangelical circles - Is the trend still alive? I’m outside the bubble now - to produce slogans that were printed on t-shirts. These could be plays on words or adaptations of slogans for products or pop culture references. Further sloganeering pertained to titles of ministries and books and programmes. In these pandemic days I recall one particular very popular Christian programme. This was a course on how to share your faith, how to “witness”. The book and course were co-authored by Mark Mittelberg and Bill Hybels (of Willow Creek fame). Hybels was THE evangelical superstar for years and is not so much anymore (google it). The programme for witnessing was called - ready for it? -
“Becoming a Contagious Christian”
(oh, how that means something so different in these days).
I have a strong memory of one more slogan. Right around the time that I accepted a job as an Associate Pastor at an evangelical Presbyterian church, the Senior Pastor of that church had found a t-shirt that he really really liked. He had ordered a number of them. Before I tell you the slogan, please hear that I came to respect and love that Senior Pastor. He became a good friend and I remain grateful for him. He was and is loving and kind and full of life. Anyway, I don’t remember the shirt in total detail. I remember that it had an image of Jesus on the cross on it. And I remember the slogan;
“Body Piercing Saved my Life”
